As a member of the Columbia Missourian outreach team, I tweeted and posted to Facebook while on shift. Here are a few examples of some of my work during one shift:
For my final project, I analyzed Facebook insights to see which posting times had the largest reach to develop a social schedule that maximized readership and post visibility. I started my project by researching similar findings from other websites and organizations. I wanted to see if their results could help the Missourian increase post reach. From this, I put together a preliminary findings document and began thinking about to apply what I was seeing to the Missourian newsroom. Using what knowledge I had found online, I tweaked the Facebook social budget to post hourly between 12 and 4. I looked at the month of April because it hadn't been as skewed by large amounts of national news. I used Facebook insights to create an excel sheet analyzing the reach (listed in thousands) of each post. I chose to look at 12-3 instead of 12-4 because in my previous research, 4 p.m. was on the tail end of the “peak time.” I found that 12 has the highest average reach per post, followed by 2 p.m. then 1 p.m. then 3 p.m.
